Public Workshop:
Managing Interpersonal Conflict Workshop Series

MRJC’s workshop series is designed to help you approach difficult situations in everyday life.

“How we speak can open or close doors, heal or hurt, create joy or suffering, and ultimately determines our own degree of happiness.” - Marshall B. Rosenburg

Have you ever heard the phrase "You are what you eat"? This catchy slogan from the fitness industry reminds us that how we "spend" our calories determines our health. Want to be fat? Then eat lots of fat. Want to be healthy? Well, you get the idea.

When it comes to your interpersonal relationships, I would say, "You are how you communicate." In other words, how you and the other person you are relating to communicate determines the strength of your relationship. Communicate consciously and considerately and you both will feel respected. Communicate out of reaction and you might feel frustrated, angry and worlds apart.

Conflict with someone else can be uncomfortable, especially when faced with situations that are important to us. Our three part "Managing Interpersonal Conflict Workshop Series" is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and tools people need to communicate more effectively in interpersonal relationships at home or work. The action learning approach that our workshops uses supports participants in integrating workshop material into their real-life experience and reflect weekly on the communication process with trained and experienced facilitators. Unlike experiential learning, which focuses on games and simulations, action learning offers people an opportunity to practice skills and strategies while they are involved in real interactions.

Workshop Objectives

At the end of the workshop series, participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in conflict.
  2. Identify common factors which can contribute to or exacerbate conflict.
  3. Recognize the difference between reacting and responding in conflict.
  4. Increased awareness of styles and approaches to conflict.
  5. Have the capacity to try new communication strategies when in conflict.

Public workshops are typically held once a month at Edmonton Public Library or Leisure Centre locations. The Managing Interpersonal Conflict Workshop Series is available to non-profit organization workplaces as well. For more information, please contact us.
